Vital to the success of the Coast
Guard Auxiliary's national boating safety efforts is an informed and
knowledgeable boating public. The Coast Guard and the Auxiliary believe that
education is the best approach to preventing accidents. Members of the Coast
Guard Auxiliary present public education classes as a service to the boating
public.

Flotilla 2-7 is offering a number of
boating classes that are open to the public and available in your
area. To register or for more information, call the contact person
listed below. The courses, which are briefly described below,
are: ABC
- America's Boating Course; BSC - Boating
Safely Course; BS&S -
Boating Safety and Seamanship; BCN - Basic
Coastal Navigation; ACN - Advanced Coastal
Navigation and GPS for Mariners. Note
that either the ABC, BSC, or BS&S would prepare you to obtain a NJ
Boating Safety certificate, required to operate a powerboat in the state
for those born on or after January 1, 1979.

Several different types of courses
have been designed to cover a wide variety of subject areas. These classes vary
in length and subject matter. Although all Auxiliary units teach the same basic
courses, an effort is made to personalize the course for the geographic area
covered. Here is a brief description of the most frequently offered courses.
Boating
Skills and Seamanship: This course, designed with power boaters in
mind, covers either six or thirteen lessons. The first six lessons are called
the core subjects and are the minimum required to receive a certificate. The
additional seven lessons cover more subjects. In all, there are thirteen
chapters:

America's
Boating Course: This is our newest offering that covers the
fundamentals of boating. The course is designed for skippers and crew of
all types of watercraft. It is a condensed version of Boating Skills
and Seamanship. The course material covers:
- General information about boats
- Trailering, fueling and maintaining your
boat
- Navigation rules
- How to operate your boat safely
- Laws and regulations to which you must
adhere
- Handling boating emergencies
- Enjoying water sports with your boat
The course materials include both an 80 page full
color manual and a CD with interactive "courseware". The
manual is your textbook and includes extensive diagrams, graphics and boating
tips. The courseware is interactive and makes use of animation, video,
and sound. The courseware includes resources that will come in handy
long after you have completed the course: printable forms (checklists,
accident reports, float plans, etc.) and links to reference documents such as
the Navigation Rules.
America's Boating Course is recognized by the U.S.
Coast Guard and when successfully completed via classroom-based training,
would enable you to obtain a NJ Boating Safety certificate.
Basic
Coastal Navigation (BCN)
and Advanced Coastal Navigation (ACN):
These courses are comprehensive courses to prepare
the boater with the knowledge needed to safely pilot a boat.
Both courses include: terminology and definitions; in-depth discussion of
the magnetic compass; the nautical chart; navigator’s tools and instruments;
dead reckoning; and piloting. ACN adds lessons on the impact of current;
tides and tidal currents; radio navigation; and voyage planning."
GPS
for Mariners
Are you
utilizing your GPS fully for navigating using waypoints and routes in concert
with nautical charts? If not, come
to our all new workshop and bring your handheld GPS.
The course includes instruction and class exercises that you do with your
GPS to reinforce learning.

What if the GPS fails?
The National
Association of States Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approves all of the
adult courses for content. Contact your insurance agent for any applicable
discounts. Certificates are awarded to all graduates. The Auxiliary teaches the
basic rules of safe boating to thousands of students in multi-lesson courses
annually.
